Vikings back Minnesota teams at NFL FLAG Championships on global stage

The Vikings put Minnesota youth flag football on a bigger stage by backing local teams headed to the NFL FLAG Championships in Westfield, Indiana. NFL FLAG says the event is the third annual NFL FLAG Championships presented by Toyota and the largest youth flag football tournament in the world, and the Colts said the field at Grand Park Sports Campus would feature “the world’s best youth flag football players” from July 23-26.

That spotlight did not come from one post or one weekend. In February, the Vikings said they had partnered with 104 Minnesota schools for the 2026 season of a high school girls flag football league, building a school-based path that reaches far beyond the championship trip. The franchise also previously pledged $75,000 in 2022 to create a middle-school girls flag football league in future years, with the goal of making girls high school flag football a sanctioned varsity sport in Minnesota.

The Vikings and Minneapolis Public Schools also launched a girls flag football league, and in June the team hosted the Minnesota High School Girls Flag Tournament at TCO Stadium, where Rosemount won the state championship. That kind of year-round structure matters because it gives players somewhere to start, somewhere to develop and somewhere to prove they belong before they ever get to a national bracket.

Green Bay’s July 7 championship coverage showed the reach is not limited to Minnesota, with the Packers saying their 2026 delegation included 10 teams from across three states. Taken together, the club-backed trips to Westfield point to a broader shift in flag football: the biggest stage is no longer just a reward for a good local season, but a sign that the sport now has enough school support, funding and tournament depth to keep growing.
