Vikings spotlight girls flag football star at training camp clinic
The Vikings and Hy-Vee brought girls flag football onto the training-camp stage in Eagan on Aug. 5, turning a clinic into a showcase for Talia Vescio, whom the team identified as the 2026 Minnesota girls flag football Player of the Year. Vescio’s 65 touchdown passes gave the event real football weight, and the special surprise attached to her recognition showed the franchise is treating the girls game as a legitimate development path, not a novelty.
Vescio’s season made the choice an easy one. The Rosemount junior quarterback threw 65 touchdowns while leading the Irish to an undefeated season and a state championship, production that fits the sport’s passing-heavy structure and explains why she became the face of the Vikings’ latest girls flag football push. In a league still defining its place in Minnesota, a passer who can stack that kind of scoring volume becomes more than a standout; she becomes a reference point for what elite play looks like.
The clinic also carried a broader access message. By putting girls flag football inside the same training-camp environment that surrounds the Vikings’ summer work, the team gave young players the visibility and branding that can help a still-emerging sport feel permanent. Hy-Vee’s role mattered too, because corporate backing often supplies the funding, logistics and reach that youth sports programs need before school systems fully catch up.
That development push has already produced results on the field. Rosemount beat Rogers 45-12 in the 2026 Minnesota Girls Flag Football League championship game, then the Vikings honored the Irish at the team’s final minicamp practice at TCO Performance Center three days later. Rosemount followed Mahtomedi as league champions after the inaugural statewide championship the year before, a sign that the sport is starting to build its own competitive history in Minnesota even as sanctioning with the Minnesota State High School League remains a major goal.
The Vikings have also widened the platform beyond one clinic. The team has announced a partnership with the Star Tribune to grow girls flag football in Minnesota and has hosted a high school girls flag football showcase with USA Football. Put together, the clinic, the awards and the partnerships show a pipeline taking shape from NFL visibility to grassroots participation, with Vescio’s season standing at the center of it.
