WFDF crowns first WMUCC 2026 champions as Canada takes gold

Endless Sunset, Surly GGM and Vintage became the first world champions of WMUCC 2026 on Championship Friday in Nottingham, with the Great Grand Masters finals giving the event its opening burst of gold at Highfields Sports Complex. The three title games showed the range of elite masters ultimate at this stage of the tournament: one runaway, one controlled win and one one-point finish that went to Canada.

Endless Sunset GGMX set the tone in the Great Grand Masters Mixed final, beating Babymaker 15-8 in a floodlit 20:00 GMT showcase game. Surly GGM then followed with a 15-9 victory over Johnny Cashed in the Great Grand Masters Open final, keeping the American-heavy side of the bracket on top as the first medals were decided.

The narrowest and most consequential final came next. Vintage edged Nor’Easter 12-11 in the Great Grand Masters Women’s championship to deliver Canada its first gold medal of the event. In a tournament built around players who have kept their standards deep into their ultimate careers, that one-point margin landed with particular force: it was the closest of the first three finals and the result that broke through for a new champion nation.

By the time those titles were awarded, the scale of WMUCC 2026 had already become hard to miss. WFDF said 561 games had been contested since play began on Sunday, with more than 13,000 points scored across pool play and the knockout rounds. The seven-day championship has brought 150 teams from 27 countries to Nottingham, with more than 4,400 athletes on site at Highfields and across the tournament footprint in and around the city.

The first championship games also set up the rest of a busy final stretch. WFDF moved from the Great Grand Masters medal games into the remaining Grand Masters Open, Grand Masters Women’s and Grand Masters Mixed finals, with another three world titles scheduled before the tournament closed on Saturday. The opening ceremony had already been billed as the largest gathering of Ultimate players ever assembled, and the first medals confirmed that this WMUCC is matching that scale with results that have already reached beyond the usual power centers.
