Wildcats sign USHL scoring leader Shayne Gould to bolster blue line

Moncton Wildcats added Shayne Gould after the USHL defenseman led all blue liners in scoring last season, turning a prolific year in Sioux City into a jump to the QMJHL. Moncton made the move public with a "Welcome to Moncton, Shayne!" post and called him the USHL's 2025-2026 leading defensive scorer for 2026-2027. For a defenseman, that is not just a neat stat line. Gould produced 27 points in 31 games in his second year in the league with the Sioux City Musketeers, a pace that works out to 0.87 points per game and says he was driving offense, not just joining it.

The route to Moncton shows how aggressively Canadian junior clubs shop the USHL for polished defensemen. Chicago selected Gould 45th overall in the Phase I draft, then dealt him to Sioux City for a 2025 Phase I third-round pick. Sioux City's Sept. 17, 2024 release introduced him as a defenseman coming in from Chicago, and by Jan. 6, 2026, his USHL interview profile had him on top of the defensemen scoring race with 27 points in 31 games. That kind of rise is exactly what puts a blueliner on more than one recruiting board.

This is bigger than one signing. Gould's move from the USHL to Moncton fits a familiar cross-border pattern: CHL teams keep checking the American junior market for defensemen who can run a power play, move the puck cleanly and pile up points against elite junior competition. When a player leads an entire league's defensemen in scoring, he is no longer a hidden commodity. Moncton made the bet that Gould's offense from the back end will translate immediately, and the USHL once again served as the place where a player's value climbed fast enough to force a bigger move.
