Youth flag football teams win NFL FLAG titles at Super Bowl XLIX

Ryan Football of Miami and VXS Purple of Leesburg, Virginia, won NFL FLAG championships inside the Phoenix Convention Center during Super Bowl XLIX week, putting youth flag football in the middle of the NFL’s biggest stage. The titles were decided as part of the NFL FLAG Championships powered by USA Football, with 32 teams competing across four divisions in Phoenix.

Ryan Football claimed the 9-10 coed crown, while VXS Purple took the 10-11 coed title. The championships unfolded in the same building that hosted the NFL Experience engineered by GMC, turning youth flag games into part of the Super Bowl atmosphere rather than a side attraction. That setting was the point. The NFL said the 22nd annual NFL Experience ran at the Phoenix Convention Center from Jan. 24 through Feb. 1, 2015, and billed it as an interactive theme park with participatory games, displays, entertainment attractions, youth football clinics and free autograph sessions from NFL players. Super Bowl XLIX itself was played Feb. 1 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, which placed the youth championships inside the same metro area and the same week as pro football’s championship game.

NFL FLAG had been framed by the league in 2011 as the country’s most recognizable youth flag football program, powered by USA Football, the NFL’s official youth football development partner. That branding mattered in Phoenix, where the title games carried the look and feel of a national championship event, not a neighborhood exhibition. The combination of a recognized youth brand, a Super Bowl-week venue and teams from across the United States gave the sport a level of visibility that helped push flag football further into the mainstream.

For youth flag football, Phoenix marked a clear step in that evolution. The championships showed how the sport could be staged alongside the NFL’s marquee events, with winners crowned under the same spotlight that surrounded Super Bowl XLIX. That kind of exposure helped turn flag football from a recreational sideline activity into a serious growth vehicle for young athletes, families and the programs built around them.
