Many people believe that the Hall of Fame is baseball’s most exclusive club. However, that’s not necessarily true. Cooperstown has inducted over 300 total members, yet there are only 28 members in the 500 home run Club. Furthermore, the only way to get there is to be among the best power hitters season after season. Nobody else can decide if you’re good enough or not.
So today we’re going to rank all 28 members of the 500 home run club. These athletes are the best hitters in Major League Baaseball history, but some were better than others. Also, several members tainted their careers by taking steroids so their status dropped because of that. Check out the list below via Bleacher Report.
28. Rafael Palmeiro
Palmeiro sits at the bottom of this list because he was a cheater. His statistics are amazing but they also directly relate to his steroid use. The Cuban spent his youth in Miami where he blossomed into a great baseball player. In 2005, he tested positive for steroids at the age of 40. After this, the three-time Gold Glove award winner landed his teammates in deep heat.
The former Orioles star was one of just six players with over 500 home runs and 3000 hits. But few fans respect him now because of his notoriety. A few days after he achieved the latter milestone, MLB suspended him for doping. The Mitchell Report and Jose Canseco both implicated Palmeiro (via FanBuzz). However, he denied any wrongdoing until it was irrefutable.
