Shambolic is one word we can use to describe Harden’s Game Seven against the Celtics. We could also call it atrocious or humiliating because it was so bad. Some people said that it was even worse than Ben Simmons’ gutless display against the Hawks in 2021. Remember, that game continues to haunt the Sixers today.

Harden went 3 for 11 from the field with seven assists and three turnovers. It wasn’t supposed to be this way for the former Houston star, who had an excellent regular season and even propelled the 76ers to two wins over the Celtics in the series that’s getting them blasted over all forms of sports media. But he’ll never have a better opportunity to win a ring than in 2023. Unfortunately, he’s one of the sport’s biggest playoff chokers (via CBS Sports).

Historic Underachievers

The Sixers are playoff chokers but they’re also becoming historic underachievers. We’ve seen multiple variations of the roster over the past few seasons with incredible potential. First, there was the Embid-Simmons axis before James Harden arrived. They’ve assembled championship-caliber teams but they haven’t got over the finish line. Or really even close to it.

It wouldn’t be so bad if they fought valiantly and lost close clashes. But the way they go down with a whimper is one of the most disappointing aspects of their meltdowns. Usually, fans can point the finger at the front office if things don’t go to plan. But this is on the players and the coaches because they’re not living up to expectations (via Bleacher Report).

False Hope

James Harden was magnificent earlier in the series as he showed why he’s a former MVP. The Sixers did brilliantly to contend in the series without their star, Embiid. It seemed like a perfect set-up for Embiid to prove his MVP status but the Celtics made a mockery of this. Al Horford shut him down while Jayson Tatum acted like the best player in the league.

It was incredibly difficult for Philly’s fans to swallow after a brilliant regular season. They went 54-28 and finished third in the Eastern Conference behind their bitter rivals. Unfortunately, they couldn’t get past their hated enemies who put them to the sword in back-to-back seasons (via NBA.com).

Time To Go

One of the worst aspects of the Sixers’ embarrassing defeat was the way they collapsed in the final quarter. They lacked inspiration and Doc Rivers couldn’t stem the tide. One unforgivable statistic emerged from the game because they scored once in a stretch of 16 possessions. That’s almost impossible to conceive but it’s what happened (via Sportskeeda).

Rivers identified when it began because he said things went wrong in the second quarter. They committed turnovers that affected their momentum. Philadelphia’s defensive performance against the Celtics was phenomenal in Game Five of the 2023 series. Tobias Harris won massive praise because he was like a one-man wall against the green tide. Let’s start with Tobias Harris because the Sixers gave him a five-year, $180 million contract. But nobody understands why he’s one of the league’s highest-paid players.

His defenders say that he’s very versatile and that’s why the team gave up a lot to keep him. They’ll point out that the Brooklyn Nets wanted him but that’s not exactly a sign of smart investment. Harris is a decent player who has excellent games. But he’s not a leader and they’re paying him far too much (via AS).

It’s incredible how passive the team was against the Celtics in Game Seven of the series. They showed no evidence of their scintillating Game Five form as they reaffirmed their status as playoff chokers. Some people call Joel Embiid the modern incarnation of Hakeem Olajuwon but he was more like a teddy bear.

Meanwhile, the less said about Harden the better because he was anonymous. It’s so frustrating because he was brilliant earlier in the series but proved his inconsistency. Al Horford infamously had a single season in Philadelphia before they shipped him out to Oklahoma. Eventually, the Dominican returned to his home from home; Boston. The media made him a scapegoat when the playoff chokers failed to live up to expectations in 2019. But he delivered a magnificent display in Game Seven in 2023 as he shut down Joel Embiid.

Horford explained what he was thinking as he put Embiid in his pocket. The Sixers lacked the killer instinct to finish the job against the Celtics in 2023. This is a trend that has happened too many times in recent years with the franchise. Embiid won the MVP Award in 2023 after a stellar regular season. The Cameroonian fought off Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo as he won the prize for the first time. But he proved that it means nothing during the business end of the year. He had a horrible game seven against Boston and played like garbage for the playoff chokers.

The Celtics arguably had the best roster in the playoffs but the Sixers had a meltdown. A compromised Embiid put up 15 points in the series-defining game as he failed to deliver. Everybody knows that the City of Brotherly Love has some of the most passionate sports fans in the nation. Yes, sometimes they go too far but they care about their teams with devotion. But spare a thought for the NBA lovers because the 76ers aren’t living up to the achievements of the city’s other franchises.

The Eagles have played in three Super Bowls since the Sixers last made the Eastern Conference Finals. The Phillies had three World Series appearances while the Flyers made it to the Stanley Cup finals. Meanwhile, the Union won the MLS Cup and they didn’t even exist in 2001. The Sixers are notorious playoff chokers but it doesn’t help that their coach also has a horrible record. Rivers infamously suffered a shocking Finals loss during his time in Boston. A glance at his playoff record proves that nobody can trust him to deliver when it counts because it’s not good.

Yes, he won a ring in 2008 with Boston, ironically enough, but this was an anomaly. He has blown nine playoff series leads since then as he became the butt of many jokes. The Sixers can’t rely on Rivers to get them out of their postseason malaise because he can’t do it.
