24. Alex Smith
Smith’s comeback story is arguably the greatest in NFL history. He could have lost his leg or even his life after a horrific leg break in 2018. In 2020 he made an amazing return to professional football with the Washington Football Team. It’s an amazing story, but fans still can’t pretend Smith has necessarily played well. He only came in because former first-round selection Dwayne Haskins was less convincing than Nate Robinson in a boxing ring.

Meanwhile, Smith’s contract is very lucrative and has proven to be an extremely poor piece of business from the franchise’s perspective. His deal guarantees him $71 million and expires in 2023. He will cost them a $24.4 million cap hit or if they cut ties, $10.8 million in dead money. Looking at this from a cold, business-like perspective, Smith has failed to repay this massive investment on the playing field.
