Smith’s well-documented injury came in 2018 when he took a sack against the Houston Texans. Washington led the NFC East but it all went downhill from this game. Smith suffered a horrific leg break that legitimately almost killed him. An infection set in and surgeons considered amputating the limb.

The Texans won the game and a malaise set in. Colt McCoy became their starter for the rest of the season but they only won two more games. It was a shambles as they missed the playoffs. Smith was in good form before his injury but this was a disaster and they arguably haven’t recovered (via ESPN).

The Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2001 as Lewis showed why he was one of the NFL’s most important players. The linebacker earned five Pro Bowl appearances as he made 69 consecutive starts for Baltimore. He was a wrecking ball of destruction who stayed on the field thanks to insane durability.

But then he dislocated his shoulder in an innocuous moment that came out of nowhere. This contributed to ruining the Ravens’ Super Bowl defense because he was a key cog in their system. They finished 7-9 and they disappointed their fanbase after one of their greatest-ever years (via CBS News).

Carson Palmer

It’s amazing the difference that one player can make to an NFL season. The Cardinals discovered this the hard way in 2014 as they blazed their way to a 9-1 start. On paper, it appeared that they would be contenders at the business end of the postseason. But then out of nowhere Palmer tore his ACL.

Then they immediately fell into a malaise and won just two of their remaining games. His injury ruined their genuine playoff hopes as they struggled to make passes. It’s a shame because backup Ryan Lindley wasn’t in Palmer’s class. They snuck into the Wildcard Round but lost to the Panthers (via Sports Illustrated).

On paper, the Titans had a successful season in 2021 because they went 12-5 and won the AFC South. But they fell short in the playoffs and missed their star running back Henry for most of the year. This came after he won the Offensive Player of the Year award as the Titans’ main man.

However, it was an extremely frustrating time for Henry and it could have been the difference for the Titans. If they had their human bulldozer who knows how far they would have gone into the postseason? These are the variables that decide where Super Bowl rings go (via AP News).

The Broncos entered a transitional period in 1999 because John Elway retired. It was always going to be a big ask to succeed with a new quarterback after so long with their franchise icon at the helm. Davis had a significant role to play in their hopes of success but ultimately he sealed their doom.

That’s because his ACL tear came out of nowhere in the fourth week of the season. The Broncos proceeded to lose a string of games by seven points or less without their elite running back. That was the end of their playoff hopes because they didn’t have the talent to replace him (via Sportskeeda).

Nobody will pretend that McNabb was the greatest quarterback ever. But he did a good job for the Eagles and it was a major blow when they lost him to injury in 2005. This came after their Super Bowl appearance against the Patriots. Their fans hoped that they’d push on but that’s not what happened.

It’s hilarious that franchises still go crazy searching for the next top quarterback when everybody knows that defenses win Super Bowls. Revis helped Rex Ryan’s Jets reach successive AFC Championship Games but then disaster struck. He tore his ACL in Week 3 of 2012 and destroyed their playoff hopes.

This was back when some people thought that Mark Sanchez was the Jets’ most important player. However, it soon became clear that Revis was their main man. He did an unbelievable job of smashing opposition receivers and limiting their scoring opportunities (via SBNation).

Many praised Rivers when he played the 2007 AFC Championship Game with a torn ACL. The Chargers clashed with the undefeated Patriots as Rivers refused to back out. It was noble but ultimately it didn’t help his team overcome the odds. Rivers played every snap but the injury affected his productivity (via NESN).

History remembers this game kindly because Rivers showed his grit and heart. But he didn’t play very well as he completed just 19 of 37 passes with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Maybe a healthy Rivers could have changed the outcome of this game. Unfortunately, the injuries came out of nowhere to ruin their chances.

America’s Team had massive hopes ahead of the 2015 season. Most fans agreed that they were desperately lucky to fall out of the playoffs the previous year. They had a great shot of making it through the weak NFC East. But then Tony Romo fractured his collarbone and they started 0-7.

Brees had a labrum injury that curtailed his season and this hurt their chances of a postseason run. They won some huge games but ultimately didn’t make it to the promised land. In January 2023, the Bills met the Bengals in a key season-ending game with huge postseason implications. But then a shocking moment came out of nowhere that put football out of most people’s minds.
