The late, great Alzado was one of the most fearsome NFL players of his day. He represented the Raiders with pride and developed an intimidating persona. That’s also why he ended up fighting in one of the first iconic celebrity boxing matches when he faced Muhammad Ali.

They met in Mile High City, Denver, in an eight-round exhibition. Ali was past his best at the time but he still schooled Alzado. This fight inspired some of the freak shows that happened in the 21st century. Perhaps that’s not the legacy that either of these two legends wanted (via Denver Post).

Chad Johnson

Also known as ‘Ochocinco,’ Johnson was one of the most exciting wide receivers of his day. The former Bengals star retired from football in 2014 after a short spell in Canada. However, he still found ways to make headlines and remain involved in sports. He agreed to fight Brian Maxwell, a bare-knuckle boxer, in 2021.

The pair strapped on their gloves and went head-to-head in the bout. In the end, Johnson suffered a knockdown but won praise for his durability and performance.”My life has always been about taking chances and doing crazy stuff — this was on my bucket list,” Johnson told ESPN. “This was a message to everyone out there: Don’t be scared to take chances.”

Bolts scored two goals during the team’s preseason but critics questioned his overall ability. In the end, the Australian side offered him a $150,000 contract but Bolt rejected it. He wanted three million dollars but the Mariners refused to consider this. It was a fascinating moment in soccer history but it lasted for as long as one of Bolt’s races.

Many people consider Silva to be the greatest UFC fighter of all time. The Brazilian star brought sublime striking skills as well as an elite IQ to the sport. Silva entered the world of professional boxing and quickly built up an unbeaten record. Malignaggi knew he had physical shortcomings as a boxer but he made up for them with his work rate and skill. This won him IBF and WBA titles as well as a lot of money. Then UFC superstar Conor McGregor hired him as part of his training camp for the Floyd Mayweather fight. But leaked footage of a knockdown infuriated Malignaggi (via TalkSport).

McGregor never offered him an official fight but it wasn’t over. Malignaggi agreed to fight McGregor’s training partner, Artem Lobov, in a bare-knuckle boxing match. These freak show events were above Malignaggi as a former champion but he didn’t care. Unfortunately, he lost to Lobov and his pride suffered.

Johnnie Morton

Detroit has been through some tough times recently but they remember Morton with fondness. The wideout put in some good performances for the franchise and helped them to a postseason appearance in 1999. Morton also competed in some freak shows with a notable MMA fight against Bernard Ackah.

This was a terrible mistake because he suffered a brutal knockout loss. If there’s one thing that retired NFL players don’t need more of its head trauma.
