Fans, the sports media, and team owners don’t have a lot of patience when NFL players don’t perform well. They write them off rapidly and assume that they’ll never reach the heights they expected during better years. And sometimes younger athletes take their time to adapt and they get labeled as busts. Perhaps other players are in the wrong situation or they’re getting older. But plenty of NFL stars stormed back after being written off by the media and fans.

So today we’ll look at some of the greatest NFL stars who didn’t impress and were written off at various points in their careers. All of these athletes stormed back in one way or another. Some of them did it a couple of times as they battled against the odds. Find out which players silenced their doubters by coming back right here.

Michael Vick

Vick’s dogfighting scandal was one of the most controversial events in NFL history. Law enforcement uncovered that he led the cruel underground operation and he received four years in jail. It was a massive story because he was one of the best quarterbacks of his era. This was also a major blow to the Falcons but they understandably cut him.

Some people might think that he would never play again. But this is football and it has no morals. It’s difficult to pass on a good quarterback and the Eagles swooped for his services. He stormed back and he even made the Pro Bowl in 2010. His crime tainted his legacy but he bounced back in style (via MSN).

Christian McCaffrey

The Carolina Panthers recognized that they had a diamond on their hands in McCaffrey. They made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history in 2020. This was after a Pro Bowl season where he entered Offensive Player of the Year contention. However, it all went wrong in a flash for McCaffrey (via The Athletic).

Injuries ravaged him over the next couple of seasons and he only played 10 games. This frustrated many fans, who wrote him off and thought that he’d never achieve his best form again. However, the Panthers traded him to San Francisco and he made an instant impact out West. He even completed the rare trifecta of passing, receiving, and rushing a touchdown in one game as he stormed back.

Aaron Rodgers (2021)

2021 began in controversial circumstances for Rodgers after a Week One loss. The Packers looked horrible and many people immediately wrote him off. Meanwhile, there were a lot of distractions during the offseason. It emerged that he lied about his vaccination status.

However, it’s impossible to write off a player of Rodgers’ quality. He won his fourth MVP award and his second in consecutive years. This was an outstanding achievement and a testament to his consistency. It’s also one of the few things he’s done that Tom Brady hasn’t (via Clutchpoints).

Carson Palmer

It says a lot about Palmer’s situation that the Bengals called his comeback one of the greatest moments in franchise history. Kimo Van Oelhoffen destroyed the quarterback’s knee in the 2005 playoffs. Surgeons helped reconstruct the knee but they warned Palmer that his career may be over.

But somehow Palmer healed quickly and stormed back for the following season. Incredibly, he tore his ACL again when he played for the Cardinals but he recovered well. This is a terrible injury because it requires a lot of rehabs and the surgery doesn’t always work. Palmer was lucky because an injury this bad can force athletes into retirement.

New Orleans made Bush a first-round pick after his legendary collegiate career with USC. These days it’s rare to take a running back this early but the move delighted their fans. However, he didn’t reach his full potential with the Saints and had a lot of injuries. Yes, he won a Super Bowl but also had statistically his worst season in Louisiana.

Many people labeled him a bust after he left for Miami because of the original hype. But then he found his feet in the Sunshine State. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2011 after a series of exceptional performances. Bush repeated the feat later with the Detroit Lions as he stormed back.

There’s nothing worse than when a star player injures themselves in the opening game of the season. The Chargers endured this in 2016 when Allen tore his ACL against the Chiefs. This is one of the worst injuries for a wide receiver because it takes away their burst and ability to cut. Manning remains one of the most polarizing quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. One side thinks he has an overrated resume and was lucky to win two Super Bowl rings. Others point to his franchise records and clutch performances in two Super Bowls. Nonetheless, Manning was trending towards bust status before 2007.

Don’t forget, he entered the NFL Draft with a lot of hype around him. Then the Chargers went to war as they tried to coax him out West but he refused to play ball. Manning’s first two seasons as a starter were quite average but he proved his abilities. At the end of the day, he has the same amount of rings as his legendary brother Peyton Manning (via Fansided).

Kurt Warner

Warner’s story is one of the most legendary in NFL history. The undrafted quarterback languished in NFL Europe after a few seasons of arena football. Finally, he secured a place on an NFL roster as a Rams’ backup. Nobody expected him to be a part of one of the most beautiful fairytales in sports history (via Bleacher Report).

Trent Green’s preseason knee injury gave Warner his dream shot. Suddenly, he was the Rams’ starter and didn’t look back. Warner led St. Louis to Super Bowl glory and broke records along the way. There’s even a Netflix movie about his life and amazing career. It’s a fantastic, feel-good story about how he stormed back from the football basement.

Rob Gronkowski (2014)

Gronk’s first appearance on this list relates to his ACL injury in 2014. He is one of the greatest tight ends ever but faced adversity with many injuries throughout his career. Tom Brady also had an ACL tear but never had speed to lose. Yet tight ends depend on their speed, mobility, and agility over the middle of the field, so many people feared for Gronk’s career.

In the end, they didn’t have anything to worry about because he stormed back in style. Gronkowski won two more Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and another with Tampa Bay. He didn’t slow down at all and proved that modern sports science is in a different realm from the olden days (via ESPN).

Nobody counted on Smith enjoying an incredible renaissance. The former Jets first-round pick was a model of consistency throughout the year. Tupa had a wacky career compared to many other players on this list. He started life as a quarterback but failed to convince teams that he was good enough for the NFL. The Ohio State product was a starter for the Cardinals before he became a Colts backup (via NESN).

Watt is one of the best defensive players in history and a dedicated competitor. However, his willingness to put his body on the line means that he has a very long injury list. But he stormed back and reestablished his close relationship with Rob Gronkowski. Tampa Bay marched its way to the Super Bowl against the Chiefs. Nobody on this list has a story like Bleier’s. The Steelers drafted the halfback in 1968 but then he found himself in Vietnam the following year. The Niners made him the first overall pick in 2005 and he arrived with big expectations. But four offensive coordinators in as many years didn’t help him settle into any one gameplan.

Many people labeled him as a bust and said the 49ers should move on. In the end, he settled and stuck around for eight seasons but left with a complicated legacy. Many older NFL fans maintain that Montana was the greatest quarterback ever. That’s tougher to do now that Tom Brady has almost double the amount of Lombardi trophies, but Montana remains one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. Most people probably wouldn’t expect to find Goff on this list. But it’s amazing how he turned his career around after he moved to Detroit. Now it’s laughable to think of Lynch as anything but a success in the NFL. The marauding running back was a brilliant player for the Seahawks. In hindsight, it seems laughable that people wrote Peterson off in 2012. The wide receiver came off a career season before he tore his ACL and MCL. They became a contender in his second season and went to the Super Bowl. But he had a bad game and they suffered a shocking loss. Brady always had doubters but they were especially loud in 2016. Max Kellerman infamously wrote the quarterback off and claimed that he was entering the twilight of his career. The Patriots icon mocked his statement because his number improved as he reached his forties.
