2021 began in controversial circumstances for Rodgers after a Week One loss. The Packers looked horrible and many people immediately wrote him off. Meanwhile, there were a lot of distractions during the offseason. It emerged that he lied about his vaccination status.

However, it’s impossible to write off a player of Rodgers’ quality. He won his fourth MVP award and his second in consecutive years. This was an outstanding achievement and a testament to his consistency. It’s also one of the few things he’s done that Tom Brady hasn’t (via Clutchpoints).

Carson Palmer

It says a lot about Palmer’s situation that the Bengals called his comeback one of the greatest moments in franchise history. Kimo Van Oelhoffen destroyed the quarterback’s knee in the 2005 playoffs. Surgeons helped reconstruct the knee but they warned Palmer that his career may be over.

But somehow Palmer healed quickly and stormed back for the following season. Incredibly, he tore his ACL again when he played for the Cardinals but he recovered well. This is a terrible injury because it requires a lot of rehabs and the surgery doesn’t always work. Palmer was lucky because an injury this bad can force athletes into retirement.

New Orleans made Bush a first-round pick after his legendary collegiate career with USC. These days it’s rare to take a running back this early but the move delighted their fans. However, he didn’t reach his full potential with the Saints and had a lot of injuries. Yes, he won a Super Bowl but also had statistically his worst season in Louisiana.

Many people labeled him a bust after he left for Miami because of the original hype. But then he found his feet in the Sunshine State. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in 2011 after a series of exceptional performances. Bush repeated the feat later with the Detroit Lions as he stormed back.

There’s nothing worse than when a star player injures themselves in the opening game of the season. The Chargers endured this in 2016 when Allen tore his ACL against the Chiefs. Warner’s story is one of the most legendary in NFL history. The undrafted quarterback languished in NFL Europe after a few seasons of arena football. Trent Green’s preseason knee injury gave Warner his dream shot. Suddenly, he was the Rams’ starter and didn’t look back. Warner led St. Louis to Super Bowl glory and broke records along the way. There’s even a Netflix movie about his life and amazing career. It’s a fantastic, feel-good story about how he stormed back from the football basement.

Gronk’s first appearance on this list relates to his ACL injury in 2014. He is one of the greatest tight ends ever but faced adversity with many injuries throughout his career. Tom Brady also had an ACL tear but never had speed to lose. Yet tight ends depend on their speed, mobility, and agility over the middle of the field, so many people feared for Gronk’s career.

In the end, they didn’t have anything to worry about because he stormed back in style. Gronkowski won two more Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and another with Tampa Bay. He didn’t slow down at all and proved that modern sports science is in a different realm from the olden days (via ESPN).

He threw more touchdown passes than either Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. Smith also had the highest completion rate of the regular season. Meanwhile, Wilson flopped in Denver as they had a terrible season and fired their coach (via The Guardian).

Tupa had a wacky career compared to many other players on this list. He started life as a quarterback but failed to convince teams that he was good enough for the NFL. The Ohio State product was a starter for the Cardinals before he became a Colts backup (via NESN).

Many older NFL fans maintain that Montana was the greatest quarterback ever. That’s tougher to do now that Tom Brady has almost double the amount of Lombardi trophies, but Montana remains one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. Most people probably wouldn’t expect to find Goff on this list. But it’s amazing how he turned his career around after he moved to Detroit. In hindsight, it seems laughable that people wrote Peterson off in 2012. The wide receiver came off a career season before he tore his ACL and MCL. It’s not a shock that he won the Comeback Player of the Year award after he stormed back from injury. His heart and indomitable spirit deserve a lot of credit because it was so inspiring.
