Steven Bradbury
Nobody expected Bradbury to win a gold medal in Salt Lake City in 2002. But that’s exactly what happened for the Australian in one of the few positive stories on this list. He made the final of the short-track speed skating race as an outsider. However, soon, everybody would know his name after a career-defining performance.

It was like the tortoise racing against the hare because he fell behind the pack. Nonetheless, he benefited from this because the other athletes crashed and had a massive pile-up. Bradbury skated past them and maintained his composure on his way to a historic victory (via Olympics.com).
