Zinedine Zidane
Zidane was brilliant in the 2006 World Cup as he led France to the finals. They played Italy in the showpiece event and depended on their captain. He scored an early penalty as they took the league but he cost his team the game. This came after he hit Marco Materazzi with a brutal headbutt.

Materazzi allegedly insulted Zidane’s sister and mother but the Frenchman’s reaction was disproportionate. He responded to the bait with violence and potentially cost his team the win. It became an iconic and career-defining moment because of the drama (via NZ Herald).
