Talent is not enough to make an elite athlete special or successful. Many successful sportspeople were not the best in their age groups when they were young. While they were gifted, they also worked incredibly hard. Meanwhile, some of the most skillful athletes squandered their careers through laziness or problems off the field.
Unfortunately, this is an all-too-common occurrence across several different sports. Many athletes emerge from struggling communities and struggle to shake off the baggage and bad influences. They succumb to crime and substance abuse. Then, there are those who think talent is enough to coast through contracts when it simply is not. Check out the list below via Complex and Bleacher Report.
30. Aaron Hernandez
There was a time when Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski were the future for the New England Patriots. Together, they were two of the most effective tight ends in the NFL. However, nobody counted for the warped tragedy that was Hernandez’s life. He murdered Odin Lloyd and was found guilty in 2018. This incident ended his chance of a normal life.
Revelations emerged of Hernandez’s awful childhood and the fact that he was a closet bisexual. Furthermore, he suffered hallucinations that were believed to be the result of CTE. This story stunned the NFL world as well as his teammates. He later committed suicide while incarcerated. Hernandez squandered his entire life, not just his career as an NFL star.
